Why Did You Start Your Business?

Hello there,
My name is Anusha, and I’m the founder of Sanctuary Beauty. I have had many questions asked about my journey to entrepreneurship, the most common is “Why did you start a business?”
Which makes complete sense since I have a background in healthcare and have practiced Occupational Therapy for 15 years.
The answer is… I needed to start applying what I taught to my patients into my life. Having worked in mental health for part of my career I saw the benefits of teaching self-care to people who were suffering from stress-induced diseases.
I vividly remember an 18 year old who had a history of depression with low self-esteem and had numerous admissions into the mental health unit. After my initial assessment, I decided to try a mini-makeover with her, to explore her feelings of low self-esteem and to help her recognize that she was indeed beautiful on the outside. While guiding her through how to apply moisturizer and simple makeup, her facial expression gradually changed from a blank stare to a radiant smile and, finally making eye contact with me.

It was amazing to see the positive transformative power of simple beauty products on her sense of self.

Fast forward 10 years later, after giving birth to my first child, I experienced symptoms of postpartum depression. It got to a point where I felt extremely exhausted all the time and found it difficult to manage my day to day activities.

This wasn't how I wanted to live my life and this wasn't the mother and wife I wanted to be for my family.

I decided it was time to apply the coping strategies I had learned in school so that I could manage the challenges of having a newborn and adjusting to a life change.

I had to take care of my needs so that I would be able to take care of my family. It started off with having a protected bath time, as silly as that may sound. My husband would watch our daughter and I was able to take long hot baths with enough time to actually relax and recharge.

In my daily routine, I incorporated using natural, essential oil based skincare and body products to help boost my mood and have my body feel nourished.

I started walking more with my daughter around our neighborhood, the physical activity gave me the energy needed to get through the day.

Those simple steps helped me cope and heal from fatigue, mood swings and feelings of sadness I had been experiencing.

There you have it....

Body butter is made with a combination of butter and oils. When I say butter, I mean natural butter, like shea butter or cocoa butter (not the delicious Amish butter I love spreading on toast).
